Eighteen members of the Elwood FFA chapter headed to state competition this morning. They will compete in eleven different events over the next three days.
Maggie Louthan, Elwood’s FFA advisor, explained what FFA is all about.
“FFA is a student organization focused on leadership and career preparation in agriculture, food, and natural resources,” said Louthan.
The Elwood chapter is strong with 30 high school members and 12 junior high members. Those students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities.
“There are 35 different activities that students can compete in in FFA, from research projects to floral design. Students can also be involved in community service activities and leadership roles as well,” explained Louthan.
Students may think that FFA focuses entirely on farm life, but that’s not the case.
“There are a lot of different opportunities in FFA and it is not just for kids who grew up on a farm,” said Louthan. “Everyone is involved in food production or natural resources in some way so if any of those topics interest you, give FFA a try.”
Louthan said that FFA members find the activities fun and competitive.
“Students should join FFA because they can learn a lot and win competitions that will also prepare them for the future,” she said.
