Get ready for a sneak peak into the Elwood School kitchen that prepares over 250 meals a day! There are three people on the kitchen staff who work together: Casey Barrow, Ashley Durk, and Felicia Rademacher. They all play a vital role in making sure our food comes to our trays hot and fresh! The kitchen received a new meat slicer, which allows meat that is shipped in to stay fresh and makes purchases for the kitchen cheaper. There’s also a new cart cover that helps keep food hot. Along with a few new additions to the kitchen, a few additions to the menu have been made. Some of these are broccoli cheese soup, chili soup, and a lot of new breakfast items, like breakfast bowls and sandwiches.
“This year has gone smoothly,” said Felisha. The whole crew worked long hours last year and now it’s paying off with solid recipes and delicious meals. Fresh fruit has been easier to get because of proper planning by cooks and timing purchases so the fruit is fresh and cheap.
With some new additions some things have been taken off the menu, most importantly Uncrustables. This was taken off the menu for a couple of reasons but mainly the poor nutritional value. The cooks have to fill out a nutritional regimen for every week and plan and understand what goes into your food and how they can make it as healthy as possible.
In addition to serving great food, the members of the kitchen staff love to talk to students. So if you're ever wanting to give compliments to the chefs, go ahead!
