KINDERGARTEN NEWS ARTICLE

Cheyenne Fitzgerald and her kindergarten students are always having fun!

The students are currently learning about high frequency words, long vowel sounds, and are diving into learning how to read independently. During math they have been working on adding and subtracting by 5, and are now starting to work on adding to 10. Then in phonics, they are working on initial sounds, how to blend sounds to make words, and using words to build and make a sentence!

Referring to the kindergarten reading program, Fitzgerald said, “We are loving the program!”

Students just finished their government unit in social studies, where they learned many things about the government and how it works. They are now shifting toward a new science unit about the different seasons and how weather changes with each passing season!

A special activity the kindergartners are doing through the month of December is traveling around the world to different countries and seeing how they celebrate  different holidays. Each day or two they travel to a new country and learn many things about it, and then they do a fun craft that is specific to that country.

“The kids absolutely love it, and so do I,”said Fitzgerald.

The ten kindergarten students have lots of big goals this year. Their biggest classroom goal they have set is learning how to read independently. They practice daily in their phonics reading program.

“I love to see them use any free time getting library books out and trying their best to read to themselves,” said Fitgerald. They each also have classroom jobs each week that they love doing.

A challenge that the class faces this year is that there are nine girls and one little boy. However, Fitzgerald said, “We are all one big family and they are so loving and kind towards everyone. They are learning how to be problem solvers and work together when they have an issue.”

One of the class’s biggest strengths is that they are full of compliments and they love boosting each other up!

“Talk about team players, and working together to get a task done, this is your class!” Fitzgerald said. They have a classroom saying: “We can do hard things!” and Fitzgerald says they do just that!

Kindergarten students continue working hard and doing hard things with great confidence each day. “I’m excited and eager to see how the rest of our year goes!” said Fitzgerald.
