The eager-to-learn first graders are staying busy, and here is what’s going on in the first grade classroom right now!
They are currently working on place values in math class and on story elements in reading class. They have lots of fun reading stories, as well as identifying characters, settings, problems, and solutions. In social studies they are working on their map skills and getting to know the map better.
Some special activities they have planned for the rest of the year is their field trip in the spring, and publishing their own book. They are planning to start the book soon.
“It is always fun to watch them become authors and illustrators; they really take pride in their work when they see the finished product!” said Emily Devine, first grade teacher.
One goal Devine has for her students this year is to teach them to be problem solvers.
‘I strive to teach them steps to take in the real world as well, not just in math problems and reading problems,” she said.
A challenge they have faced is phonics, as it is a new curriculum. Devine said it was also hard to learn routine with her students.
“I am so proud of the progress they have made,” Devine commented.
Her students’ biggest strength is that they love to learn. From reading and science experiments to learning about animals, they are all in!
“I love that they are filled with wonder and want to explore. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the year plays out!” said Devine.
