The Elwood chapter of TeamMates continues to grow and to provide invaluable support for students. Kilah Oaklund, coordinator of the Elwood TeamMates program explained the role the organization plays in the lives of students and in the community.

“This strengths-based, one-to-one mentoring initiative is designed for students in grades 3-12, providing them with an additional caring adult who meets with them each week,” said Oaklund. “These mentors play a crucial role in the lives of our students, offering positive encouragement and demonstrating what it means to be there for someone.”

The TeamMates group has been growing, and Oaklund hopes to expand it even more.

“Currently, TeamMates has reached 38 matches, a significant step towards the goal of 40. However, there are still six students on our waitlist (two boys and four girls) eager to benefit from the support of a mentor,” said Oaklund. “This is where our community can make a difference. We are always looking for more mentors who can dedicate just 30 minutes or more each week to meet with a student. If you know someone who would be a great fit for this rewarding role, please encourage them to get involved.”

Oaklund also acknowledged the time and commitment that current mentors put into TeamMates. She noted that Elwood TeamMates could not be as successful as it is without their support. “We are also incredibly thankful for the time commitment of our mentors and the generous donations from community members that help our program thrive,” explained Oaklund. “Together, we can continue to support our students and help them reach their full potential.”
