Ben Edgecombe has almost completed his first year of teaching social studies at Elwood High School. He took a few minutes to share about how this year went for him, commenting that his first year teaching at EHS has been great.

Edgecombe said that he set several goals for himself this year, but his biggest goal was “Prepping out lessons a week in advance.”

Like many other careers, teaching has its ups and downs.

“There are days that are what I expected them to be and there are other days that are more challenging and not what I expected,” explained Edgecombe.

Edgecombe said that one of the good things about teaching is the chance to make memories with your students.

“For a class memory, mock trials are really interesting,” he said. “Watching the air mattress race at one of the pep rallies this year was really fun, too.”

When it comes to challenges in the classroom, Edgecombe mentioned student attention as a significant one: “Attention span and keeping attention while lecturing because of phones and headphones,” commented Edgecombe.

Edgecombe has had an amazing first year and is excited to come back next year!
