The freshman English class participated in a Constitution Day activity Monday and Tuesday. They were given the situation of being stranded on an island. After reviewing the U.S Constitution, they worked in groups to write and present an Island Society Constitution with the goal of being rescued. They presented their ideas to the class and then voted on the best proposal. They had some creative ideas and did a great job!

Pitt-Hopkins Awareness Day is celebrated annually on September 18th. In honor of our Pre-K friend, Meela Boyd, the Elwood Public School staff and students showed their support by wearing their Pitt-Hopkins Syndrome Awareness shirts. We have attached a picture of the flier that gives more information about Pitt-Hopkins Syndrome. The elementary students would like to thank the Elwood Booster Club for donating the students’ shirts.

“Pennies for a Purpose” is a cause the preschool class started 5 years ago as a way to teach our students about math skills, history (who is on the penny, etc) and most importantly about compassion and helping others. The past several years we have donated our ‘Pennies’ to Team Jack! While we have loved supporting Team Jack, this year our PURPOSE has changed to a little closer to home. At Elwood Public Schools, we have 4 students with unique syndromes. So our ‘Purpose’ this year is to help raise awareness and funds for research for these syndromes and support our students and their families in our community. We wanted to reach out to make you aware of this change, as we know that we are a part of an amazing school and community which has been such a huge support for our ‘Purpose’ in the past. We are excited to bring awareness to these rare diseases and use our ‘Pennies’ to help support and research them. So please help us out by starting to save your pennies as our fundraising will begin January 29th and end February 28th, which is Rare Disease Day. Stay tuned for details in January about our BIG PLANS! Of course we do not want to take away from Team Jack and the wonderful things they are accomplishing, so we hope and encourage that you continue to support them, too, if you are able.
