Logan Schroeder, assistant coach for the Hi-Line boys basketball team, recently gave some insight into the Bulls’ season. There are nine Elwood players out for boys basketball and six Eustis-Farnam players.
The Bulls have two new coaches, a challenge which the boys have met well.
“They have to rewire their thinking to get used to how new things are done, and how they’re run in practice and games. Luckily we have some pretty smart guys, so they are catching onto the new instruction as well as we could hope for,” explained Schroeder.
The team members’ experience is working in their favor, according to Schroeder.
“Our team's biggest strength is the amount of experience they’ve gained over the past years, with a majority of varsity players having multiple years of varsity experience already. This plays a big part in how well they have adjusted to us coaches,” he said.
Schroeder has set his goals high for the Bulls team, with the ultimate goal of a trip to state basketball in mind.
“One of my biggest goals for the season is making it to the state basketball tournament. With a tough sub district, it’s going to take a lot of work, but if we keep reaching the smaller goals players have set for themselves, we have a good chance at reaching the bigger goal,” commented Schroeder.
His advice for his players involves hard work and dedication: “My advice for students in this sport is letting them know that the more time they put into it, the more talented they can be; there’s no shortcuts. We can only do so much in a two hour practice, so the more they push themselves outside of the practice time, the better they’ll be when it matters.’’
Fan support and enthusiasm is important to the Bulls’ success, according to Schroeder.
“It's going to be an exciting year from what we’ve seen and what we will see, and the players know it, too. The environment that we play in with the fans involved should increase that and the motivation of the players,” said Schroeder.
